Brentwood Residence

When asked to design a significant renovation on an existing middle Tennessee farmhouse, an idea about utilizing typical farmhouse narratives - metal roofing, board and batten siding, large porches, dormers - translated into a more contemporary, if subdued, approach to create a T-shaped plan with an addition on the back to open out to an existing stone courtyard and garden. The entire house is wrapped in a new porch covered by a columnless, cantilevered metal roof whose form curves and lofts to soften the connection to the surrounding land.

“Dormers” are replaced with vertical skylight solar chimneys, and the battens of the board and batten siding are a variable pattern, based on projecting the existing and future outbuildings through the main house.
