Experimental Media) Brown University, Providence, RI 100,000sf 2022-2023 (Completed at REX) Photography by Iwan Baan A standard-bearer for flexibility in the performing arts, the Lindemann is the new home for the Brown Arts Institute at Brown University. A highly complex but automated workhorse, the Lindemann is five buildings in one, as the floors, walls, and ceiling of its main hall transform into different preset configurations, each specifically tuned for orchestras, choirs and recitals, an end-stage theater, flat floor events, and immersive experimental media modes. A cantilevered, mirrored-glass “clearstory” cuts through the fluted anodized aluminum facade, negotiating a gently sloping grade and bringing radical transparency to the making of the arts at the heart of Brown’s “open curriculum.” “Infinite Composition,” a new spatial LED artwork by Leo Villareal, clads the faces of the vertical vierendeel truss members in the low-slung lobby. The more fluid the relationship between actor and audience, the better.” -Christine Jones An arrangement of dioramas sit nestled in a grove of trees on the West Lawn. These brightly colored objects separate themselves from the richly textured landscape of the Ragdale Campus while remaining grounded by a series of stepped platforms and projections. The arrangement of these elements sit within an implied circle which relates to Howard Van Doren Shaw’s original Ragdale Ring. Enfilade House is an ongoing development for a modest single-family home in Austin, Texas. The organization of the house is defined by a 2x5 grid of 12’ square rooms: the living/occupied spaces on one side, the service spaces on the other across a 4’ circulation enfilade, which is capped by sawtooth skylights. Ironically, this icon of American architecture is rarely, if ever, designed or considered by architects. The rejection of the McMansion by the discipline is not without merit; it exemplifies the pre-2008 excesses of real estate speculation, American consumerism, suburban copypasta, racial segregation, and a general bastardization of the architectural canon. The great critic Kate Wagner has notably pointed to all of this in her wildly successful blog, McMansion Hell. Yet, the McMansion has persisted. What has resulted from this rightful criticism is a major sector of residential building which is almost completely devoid of architectural input or imagination. How can it be re-envisioned to support more diverse and affordable modes of living? Imagining a building as a toy facilitates opportunity to challenge flat, two-dimensional compositions and ornamentation typical of townhouse architecture. Instead, it explores the spatial variety of relief, three-dimensional composition, and whimsical tectonic play. The media of the project all take on distinct roles in the perception of depth: the main object, the model, is a “model of a model,” or an assemblage of pieces and components which could vary in arrangement and scale. Components break traditional architectural constraints, where pieces start to fold down or break the edge of the table. The model itself is flanked by two images: a photograph of the physical model is staged in a studio with drawing props, and a rendering from a similar view explores digital qualities.
